The Lyons girls basketball team opened with a 46-25 victory over East Rochester in Wayne County League action Wednesday evening.

Junior Gator Shields racked up a double-double with 16 points and 21 rebounds to lead the Lions (1-0) in the win over the visiting Bombers (0-1).

After a bit of a slow start, Lyons ended the first quarter with a 13-5 lead. Bombers senior guard Brianna Fedele accounted for all five of ER’s points.

In the second quarter Lyons senior Ryenn Smith picked up four assists as the Lions out scored the Bombers 14-7, taking a 27-12 lead into the locker-room at the intermission.

“We made some shots tonight, but I thought we missed a few chippy ones,” Said Lyons coach Eric Kuhn. “Gator was working hard on the glass tonight, another 20-plus rebound night. She missed a few chippies, I know she was frustrated after. Ryenn (Smith) had a good game moving the ball and Taylor (DiSanto) made a couple 3s. So if we can make those seven to 10 jumpers a night it opens up our inside.”

In the third quarter the Lions kept the same scoring pace totaling 12 points in all, but missed many scoring opportunities in the paint. The Lions led at the end of the third period 39-21.

“I thought they were playing for our bigs and I still thought we did a good job rebounding. We need to take care of the ball and keep that intensity. I wish we could keep that intensity that we had the first four minutes of the third quarter, where we pretty much opened up the game. I wish we could sustain that a little bit longer. I think conditioning is part of it. I don’t think we are ready to go a full thirty-two minutes yet. I think as the season progresses I think we’ll get there.”

The Lions defense was outstanding in the fourth quarter as Megan D’Angelo scored the Bombers only field goal with 6:50 left to play.

DiSanto nailed a pair of 3-pointers and totaled nine, while Smith added six points and seven assists for Lyons.

Brianna Fedele netted 12 points and Samantha Anderson added 5 points for East Rochester.
