With a solid core of standout athletes the Keshequa girls’ basketball team has good reason to have high hopes for the upcoming high school basektball campaign.
With the leadership of coach Pete Piraino, who’s been on the Indians’ bench for over 30 years with great success, there’s no reason to feel that 2012-13 should be any different.
The girls will begin their season in December due to the success of the girls soccer team participating in the state finals. Many of those same contributors will convert to the larger roundball and utilize their hand skills in hopes of generating the same kind of success on the hardwood.
Piraino’s club was a finalist in the Class C sectionals a year ago when they fell to Harley-Allendale-Columbia. Piraino has a good nucleus to build around with a quartet of quality starters back including seniors Kristen Jackson and Alex Flint, along with juniors Shannon Gordinier and Lindsay Piraino. Other key returners according to Piraino include senior Grace Mehlenbacher and juniors Hannah Acciari and Kate Forrester. He sites a couple of top newcomers who should be a key to the success of the team which includes junior Megan Green and sophomore Tessa Gordinier.
“This should be a fun season and there will be lots of competition in Livingston County Divsion III,” Piraino said. “We’re working hard and looking forward to all of our players improving over last year.”
