The Monroe County Exceptional Senior Game was held Friday night at Thomas in a game where teams were divided by East all stars and West all stars.
The East squad was dominated by both Pittsford Sutherland and Mendon athletes, with nine in total on the team coached by Webster Thomas’ Steve Grose.
The West team featured several players who participated in the Section 5 Class AA2 championship which was won by Spencerport. John Mahoney of Churchville-Chili coached the West All-Stars team.
It was clear from the beginning that the East team was the better of the two, doing a good job of possessing and doing an even better job of outshooting the West stars. Just nine minutes in the East team was able to head it in on a corner kick opportunity to start the scoring 1-0.
After 20 minutes both teams subbed the rest of their bench in, making it a completely new game. It didn’t feel that way though, with the East team continuing to possess the ball thanks especially to Rush-Henrietta’s Nick Gerbino. The midfielder instantly gained possession upon entering the game and drove right to the goal, attempting the first of several shot attempts that missed.
There were several excellent displays of skill by players on both teams throughout the night. The first of these came when East Irondequoit Eastridge’s Spenser Iodice guided the ball right through a defenders legs with ease, garnering several gasps from the crowd.
It seemed as though we were headed for a 1-0 East halftime lead until Victor’s Tom Kolb slipped the ball past the goalie to score another goal and give them a comfortable two goal lead.
It didn’t take long for East to continue their dominant play when just two minutes into the second half Pittsford Sutherland’s Brian Kroetz had a shot opportunity that was shut down by the West goalie.
The West’s best chance to get back in the game came at minute 45 when Greece Odyssey’s Victorin Kothor was set up beautifully and had no one between him and the goalie but was too strong and missed to the right of the goal.
Much credit should be given to both East goalies Aaron Fowlkes and Dylan Frank for their effort in shutting out the West team. There were many chances for the West to put one though but failed to convert thanks to a couple of nice saves.
It was over when with 19:42 remaining Thomas’ Chris Reed assisted Mendon’s Shea Ransford for a goal that looked similar to their second goal, when the goalie attempted to gain possession of the ball before a shot was attempted but was unable to. The goal made it 3-0, with the East team tacking on another late goal with nine minutes left to make the final 4-0.
