AOVCA - The 17th annual 3 on 3 Avoca summer classic basketball tournament in memory of Frankie Rundell will be held August fourth on Main Street in downtown Avoca.
Rundell was a life-long resident of the Avoca area. He graduated from Avoca Central School in 1998 and was an avid basketball player, participating in the sport through high school. He was a member of the 1987-88 Avoca basketball team which played in the semi-finals at the NYS High School Basketball Tournament in Glens Falls.
Frankie was tragically killed in an automobile accident in December 2001. In attempting to ease the pain of his loss, his friends are letting his memory live on through this basketball tournament, which is now in its 17th year. The proceeds of the event will help the children and young adults in the area achieve their goals through sports, whether it be youth league or high school.
Last year, proceeds from the event assisted local AAU basketball teams, sponsored a local basketball camp, local youths playing indoor soccer, a wrestling camp, and local community events. Once again, a portion of this year's proceeds will be given to Rundell's kids to be used to further their education. A scholarship has been established at Avoca Central School for two graduating seniors per year.
The event will be held on Main Street in downtown Avoca on August 4, 2018. Check in will begin at 9 a.m. with games beginning at 10 a.m. Bracket selection will be decided by drawing a number at the check in table on game day. Start times and court assignments for the first round will be posted by 10 a.m. on game day. Teams should consist of 4 or 5 members and the cost is $35.00 per member.
