DANSVILLE — Little things mean a lot, and in the case made for the completion of the Dansville and Wayland-Cohocton 2018 fall varsity football schedules ... there were a lot of little things!
In the most recent past we've simply checked those seven Friday nights (or an occasional Saturday afternoon) in September and October and we were good. This year it became "a process!"
Initially it started with the talk of Dansville possibly going to 8-man football. Red flag already! The announcement that the Mustangs would play 11-man football after all eased some of the the anxieties. But then came to move to an "Independent" schedule, which created holes in a few team's schedules, including rival Wayland-Cohocton.
Now the process became a little more complicated for Dansville Athletic Director Rob VanScoter, and some of that also fell Jim Brownell's way at the Eagle's Nest, leaving an opening on Fall Foliage Festival weekend. While the red & black searched around for opponents, the Maroon & Gold camp was seeking to fill Week 6. Things came together a short time later for Wayland-Cohocton, who announced that they would host the Red Jacket Indians on Friday, Oct. 5 at 7 p.m. at the Elsie Tripp Sports Complex which would complete their 7-game schedule ... a sigh of relief.
Dansville's difficulties were further complicated. After the Mustangs had managed to piece a half-dozen games together, with a vague possibility of yet another, came news that the Marcus Whitman Wildcats (Dansville's Week 2 opponent) decided to go the 8-man football road. Well, back to five games again.
A short time later, Week 2 was remedied by nearby Division I opponent Bath-Haverling, who welcomed the Mustangs call. For a time the program played the waiting game in hopes of somebody needing a game in the final week of the regular season. With that thought in mind about a week or so ago, I zipped Dansville a note in wonder. The reply came back that the Mustangs now had a seventh game, as Dundee (their Week 1 foe) agreed to make it a "home and home" series. Double-whew!! Another big sigh of relief.
So it goes to show you, just when you think things are falling apart, God works behind the scenes and we end up with an answer ... even in the case of high school football!
