HORSEHEADS - Horseheads topped Ithaca 49-39 at home on Thursday in a Southern Tier Athletic Conference girls basketball matchup.

Jillian Casey got the Blue Raiders off to a hot start in the first quarter, netting seven points that included a 3-pointer to cap off an 7-0 run to end the quarter with Horseheads leading 17-8.

The Lil' Red and Blue Raiders battled to a 12-12 tie in the second quarter with Casey pouring in seven more points for Horseheads and Graceann Gorsky contributing four points for Ithaca.

Casey drilled a three-pointer as time expired in the half to give the Blue Raiders a 29-20 lead.

Horseheads and Ithaca kept even in the third quarter with each team scoring 12 points. Alli Richmond paced the Blue Raiders with five points in the frame, but Madolin Woll-Crawford kept Ithaca within striking distance with five points.

In the final quarter the Lil' Red cut the lead to as little as six points at 45-39, but Richmond hit two clutch free-throws with 1:27 remaining and Horseheads played strong defense to end the threat.

Casey led the Blue Raiders with 16 points and Richmond chipped in 12 points.

The Blue Raiders improve to 11-5 with the win and will travel to Binghamton on Monday in its next contest, with game time scheduled for 7:15 p.m..
