ALFRED — Any event in Western New York scheduled for January comes with an asterisk — "Weather permitting."
That was the case for the annual Barkley Basketball Showcase, the "Sheriff's Classic" that features Allegany County programs clashing with their counterparts from Steuben County with bragging rights on the line.
The storm that hit the region starting Friday night completely altered this year's schedule, wiping out both the pair of girls games set for Friday and the slate of five boys games scheduled for Saturday. Alfred University, the Showcase's home the last two years, closed its campus due to the storm Saturday morning.
Showcase officials did their best to reschedule the seven games in a way that works out for as many parties as possible.
Hornell and Wellsville will play a doubleheader Sunday at Alfred University, with the girls game at 1 p.m., followed by the boys game at 3 p.m. The Scio and Bradford boys will then play at 5 p.m. Shuttles will be available from the upper parking lots at the AU campus.
Two other games were rescheduled for Saturday, Jan. 20 at Bath. Belfast and Avoca will meet at 6 p.m., followed by Genesee Valley and Prattsburgh at 7:30 p.m.
The Bolivar-Richburg vs. Prattsburgh girls game will be played Monday night in Bolivar at 6 p.m. The Bolivar-Richburg vs. Addison boys game had yet to be rescheduled as of Saturday evening.
"Thanks so much for standing by us while Mother Nature worked her magic. Sixty degrees to the teens in 12 hours is nuts," said Showcase founder Dana Hand. "Unfortunately all games couldn't be rescheduled as everyone's schedules didn't jive. Again, use caution when attending these games. Stay safe and thank you from the Officers of the ACDSA!"
