COHOCTON — Very seldom does a big rival match-up turn "ugly" from a scoring standpoint. However, we know that cliche ... "There's an exception to every rule." That was the case on Friday night at the Elsie Tripp Sports Complex where the "Backyard Brawl" turned instead into the "Backyard Blowout" as Wayland-Cohocton dominated Dansville 48-6 in a Week 5 clash in Cohocton.
Dansville had the momentum early, stopping the Eagles inside the red zone after a long DeAndre Green end-around. The Golden Eagles put on a stand of their own with a three-and-out series. As the Mustangs prepared to punt, they executed a fake, but came up one yard short of a first down and handed the football over to Way-Co at the 19 yard line. That set up a short 7 yard touchdown pass from Connor Englert to Cole West to get the fun started.
Englert connected with freshman tight end Max Markle for the conversion and with 5:52 left in the first the Eagles flapped their wings first, gaining an 8-0 lead. Dansville coughed up the football on its next possession. The Golden Eagles fell on the pigskin at the Mustang 40 yard line, although Dansville stopped Way-Co again.
Dansville's highlight of the night took place when Thomas Earner took the punt at his own 25 yard line, then darted and dodged tacklers and was finally tracked down at the Eagles 2 yard line after 73 yards on the return. That set the stage for Tanner Dettman's 2 yard TD run.
From that moment the momentum started to flow Way-Co's way as the Eagles scored the next 42 points. Coach Clark's troops scored twice more in the first quarter alone. On the ensuing offensive series Brandon DeGuarde broke free and won a 60 yard footrace to the end zone with 2:53 left, making it 14-6.
On the next series Wayland-Cohocton's Colton Wood intercepted a pass and returned it all the way back to Dansville's 10 yard line. Moments later Brandon DeGuarde was in the end zone again on a 6-yard scoring run. Connor Englert hit DeAndre Green for the conversion pass, increasing the margin to 22-6 at the end of the quarter.
Dansville rolled the dice on the next possession on a 4th & 1 in their own territory, but the Eagles D swooped in and took possession at Dansville's 36 yard line. Then with 10:46 remaining in the second period Connor Englert weaved his way through the left side of the Dansville defense and wound up hitting paydirt from 25 yards away, making it 28-6.
Ryan Damboise rumbled in from two yards away late in the half, then grabbed the 2-point pass from Connor Englert making it 36-6 at the break. Way-Co nearly got on the board again in the first half but Dansville's Tanner Dettman picked off a pass deep in red & black territory to turn the Eagles away.
The second half was somewhat uneventful as the scoring slowed to a semi normal pace. Both teams swapped defensive stops and a fumble or two. The Golden Eagles had a 57 yard and a 65 yard touchdown run called back on a pair of holding penalties.
Way-Co pieced together a short drive following a fumble recovery by Ryan Damboise. Brandon DeGuarde did the honors on a 10 yard run, making it 42-6. Late in the fourth Mason Willis broke free for a 60 yard scoring scamper to ice the cake to the tune of 48-6 as Wayland-Cohocton claimed the Hammer for 2017.
Wayland-Cohocton (2-3) will host Cal-Mum/Byron Bergen on Fall Foliage Friday with kick-off set for 7:30 p.m. Dansville (0-5) has the dubious distinction of heading off to Hornell in Week 6 to meet the unbeaten Red Raiders.
