The Dansville cheerleading squad continues to win in winter competitions. The Mustangs won the top spot in each of their two most recent competitions. On Jan. 21, the team trekked to SUNY Fredonia where they took a first place in their division.
On a night where the real winners were the local food pantries and the American Cancer Society, on the hardwood Wayland-Cohocton put on a 19-5 spurt to start Friday night’s game in Dansville. The Golden Eagles harnessed the horses with a final 66-46.
In front of a full house at home, the Dansville girls avenged an earlier season, last-second loss to rival Wayland-Cohocton on Friday night as key threes and free throws in the final period lifted the Mustangs to a 32-26 victory.
The Livingston Conference wrestling finals took place on Saturday at Keshequa High School in Nunda with 15 teams converging on the mats.
Call it twice as nice in many regards for the Dansville and Wayland-Cohocton basketball teams. This Thursday and Friday, Jan. 26-27, will be big days for the area rivals who will battle it out for a pair of good causes. The slate for this week’s venue has been altered somewhat as all four games will be played in Dansville.
Last night, Wayland-Cohocton’s girls basketball took a league loss to Hornell, 30-34. After Tuesday’s win over Canisteo-Greenwood, the Lady Eagles are 6-6 overall and 1-4 in Livingston Conference Division 1.
Although a number of teams chose to pay more and go further to Fairport on Saturday, Dansville’s annual Spirit Challenge was still a big hit despite being down a few teams.
The Hornell State Farm Wrestling Classic unfolded in the Southern Tier on Saturday with 21 teams in attendance. The Mustangs had a fine day with another career milestone being reached by Cody Schuster who notched his historic 100th career win at the event. Other Mustangs who placed included second place, Joe Ciranni; third place, Jason Boots-Lovetro, Ryan Hurlburt and Cody Schuster; and fourth place, Gunnar Maggio.
Following an initial tournament in Geneva a week ago, the Wayland Area Wrestling Club got things going in full force in Canisteo on Jan. 15 as the locals had a number of grapplers who hit the mats in the Southern Tier and placed at the tournament. Mike Green and club took three firsts to go along with four seconds and five thirds.
Yesterday, Dansville swimming (8-2-1, 8-1-1) hosted Hornell and came out the victors, 61-41. Dansville boys' basketball (4-6, 1-3) lost in Livonia, 43-35.
Dansville swimming (7-2-1, 7-1-1) added their seventh dual meet win at home Tuesday against Mt. Morris, 50-43.
Keshequa’s two-year captain 6-foot-2 senior Nick Faulds is an inspiration on the court to his teammates and off the court with his classmates. He’s open about his lifelong struggle with Asperger’s syndrome, a developmental disorder similar to autism that often affects interpersonal skills and coordination. We had a chance to sit down with Nick, who is not only one of the Indians’ top players, but also an honor roll student. We were joined by Todd Isaman, who is both Nick’s basketball coach as well as a friend and and mentor on and off the court. Nick is a senior at Keshequa Central School. He has lived his entire life in the Nunda area. He now lives in Tuscarora with his parents, Sam and Lisa; and three siblings, Adam, Samantha and Luke.
Dansville’s Mustangs needed of a lift of some kind on Friday night when they jumped back into Division 1 boys’ basketball action at home against Bath-Haverling. The Rams posted a nine-point lead in the game, only to see Dansville tighten up the defense and shut out Bath in the fourth quarter with a 10-0 run to cap a 42-30 win.
What’s all the cheering about? It’s none other than another first place finish, this time crowned with a grand championship as well.
Last weekend in sports, Dansville boys’ basketball (4-4, 1-2) continued their winning streak Friday with the Mustangs’ first division victory at home against Bath Haverling, 42-30.
On Friday Keshequa’s boys (3-7, 0-3) suffered a loss against York, 78-52. On Saturday, the Lady Indians (6-3,1-2) defeated LeRoy, 55-21.
Wayland-Cohocton’s boys (8-2, 3-1) claimed a 50-19 win over Livonia.
It took five tries, but Dansville boys basketball finally made rookie head coach Dave Moodie a winner on Dec. 27 in Nunda in the opening of the Keshequa Tink MacVean Tournament.
Ten teams trekked to the Geneseo Duals on Dec. 28 to work off the Christmas feast. The Dansville squad finished third in their five-team pool and then dropped a match to Alfred-Almond in the crossover to wind up sixth on the day.
