Two Golden Eagle teams ended their seasons this weekend, both having had extremely successful seasons. The girls’ track squad finished up at state competition in Syracuse with Breonica Smith placing fifth and the relay teams making competitive bids win their races. The boys’ baseball team ended its participation in the state tournament returning as final four team following tournament play in Binghamton this weekend. All of these student athletes represented their school, families and community with the utmost character and determination. Congratulations to all of the athletes and their coaches on tremendous seasons.
A wonderful Class of 2012 Awards and Scholarship program was hosted on Thursday night last week recognizing the accomplishments of the graduating seniors. Many community members attended and presented the awards given by their family members, or their businesses. A complete list of winners, along with brief descriptions and photos is available on the school website.
Although there is a lot of fun and celebrating in school, classes continue to be in session. For older students this week marks the beginning of Regents and final exams. For younger students there continues to be regular classes. Please check classroom schedules for special events, awards ceremonies and field days. If you have questions about student attendance days, please do not hesitate to check with your child’s building office. Information is also available on the school’s website. Final exam schedules have been posted to the high school and middle school websites.
Grad Bash is around the corner and there is always an appreciation for an extra set of hands. If you are interested in helping out, just email a message to gradbash@wccsk12.org. Grad Bash is a lock-in event for the graduation seniors, always held the Friday night before graduation. Students will spend the evening at Sea Breeze park and then return to over-the-top decorated school and celebrate with games, activities and general fun for the evening. Students are signed out to their parents in the wee hours of the following morning. The event is made possible through generous donations of the community, both in time and in resources.
It has been an incredible year at Wayland-Cohocton. The hard work of the year has been balanced by many many successes. Our difficult times have been softened with so many reasons to celebrate. This is a always a natural time to take stock in all that we do have as a community and all that the eager, ambitious and motivated students have accomplished throughout the year. For those returning next year, this is a brief pause before starting up another year of study and growth. To your departing seniors, we wish you the joy that comes from a life full of challenges and opportunities. As you head out into the world, embrace all of the adventures that are ahead of you and fill each day as full as you can. We are proud of you and know you will find your way to a life that is meaningful.
Wayland-Cohocton would like to take this opportunity to thank the staff at the Genesee County Express and the Dansville–Wayland PennySaver for their support of the school district but running this column each week. Our thanks also goes to the many advertisers who make the Eagles Chronicles page and the PennySaver pages that appear each month possible. These are all wonderful ways to share news and upcoming events with our community. We look forward to returning next year.
