At Websters Crossing we are happy to report that Pat Martindale is doing well after her surgery and Joice Kelley Biek’s foot problems are somewhat alleviated. We have prayers in for Betty Van Scooter’s chest surgery to go well and for many others who have challenges of every kind this week. We had a pastor-parish meeting followed by an all-congregation meeting on Tuesday to prepare the calendar of activities for 2012. We can already tell you that the Spaghetti Dinner and Music Jams will continue to be the fourth Thursday evening of the month with possible changes only around Thanksgiving this year in November. We are especially grateful for all the people that continue to support this food, music, and friendship-building activity. The next event is Thursday evening, Jan. 26 starting at 4:30 p.m.

The Springwater parks and recreation group hiked the old railroad bed surrounding the mountainside that many of us can view just above the village of Dansville’s famous, historic Castle on the Hill going next to the communication tower south of Depot Road. More than 35 people showed up at Mike and Pam Bregenzer’s home and after the two-hour hike many took part in the after hike social. All enjoyed the Cajun theme. Several brought dish-to-pass items to complement the host’s chicken–andouille jambalaya and white chocolate–cherry bread pudding complete with brule sauce. This week’s hike on January 15 will be near Garlinghouse-Atlanta Road.  For details, log onto townofspringwaterny.org, click on Calendars and details for the week’s hike, usually posted by Friday evening of the week prior or call Ellen Foltz on her cell at 585-750-6288. New hikers are always welcome and the after hike social is full of interesting people, stories and food. The new hike schedule should be posted within the next few weeks. Also, please put on your calendar the Parks and Recreation Trail Plan meeting at Town Hall on Saturday, Jan. 21, 10 a.m. to noon. Your ideas and comments are welcome.

Springwater–Websters Crossing Historical Society board meets this week on Tuesday evening to flush out the plans for the year. Ideas for programs and ways to help with the renovation and funding for the museum are always welcome. All residents of the town are urged to become members. Membership carries the satisfaction of knowing that you are doing some small thing to preserve artifacts and historical stories of the Springwater–Websters Crossing community. Don’t want to be a member, but want to help? Volunteers are needed to work on the collection committee, help set up Town Hall for meetings and potluck suppers, chair a fundraising event, work at a fundraiser or lend a hand at building repairs and setting up storage collections and display areas. Program ideas and cash donations are gratefully accepted by Springwater–Websters Crossing Historical Society, P.O. Box 68, Springwater, NY 14560.

If you have a woodlot, you may be interested in the Forest Owners Association. Several Springwater residents are active members of the Western Finger Lakes Chapter, including Dean Faklis who will be the speaker at the next event. At 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 24, Faklis will discuss “Woodland Trails & Structures: Creating Your Legacy” at the United Church of Christ, 8758 Main St., Honeoye. The first week of 2012 has passed uneventfully except for a brief spate of sub-freezing temperatures that made many of us scramble for gloves and hats. The school buses are back to picking up the children, the new town council has installed all of its new members, made its necessary appointments and set the tone for what it hopes to achieve in the next year. The theme I hear over and over is common civility towards all and a real desire to leave no stone unturned to get our town once again functioning as a whole entity. For too long divisive topics have divided us; this new council seems intent on healing wounds and bringing people together.

The organizational meeting was held on Tuesday, but the cold weather kept many of the regular attendees from venturing down the hills. The new appointees were sworn in by acting Clerk Rita Kulp and the new supervisor quickly got to work making the necessary appointments including Town Historian Havilah Toland and Deputy Historian Judy Tripp-Neu. Also appointed was Jade Perkins, who was selected by Town Clerk Claudia Gauer as her second deputy. Lynn Holmes was also appointed to handle water, sewer, parks and cemeteries and as deputy code enforcement officer. No deputy was appointed to work with Lynn at this time, and a legal notice is to be posted for the position of code enforcement officer.

The next regular town council meeting (at the time of this writing) will be Monday, Jan. 9. This is a working meeting where citizens can observe the elected members at work. No input from the public audience will be accepted, but for those of us who like to watch government at work, it will be an opportunity to observe the discussions among the council members and see how they arrive at subjects that will form the regular town council agenda for the following meeting on Monday, Jan. 23. Even if you are not too keen on watching people work, citizens are invited to attend both board meetings every month so they can better understand what their elected officials do.

The next meeting of the Springwater Gala Committee will be Thursday, Jan. 12, at 8 p.m. at the Springwater American Legion Hall on School Street. We need members of the community to come out and share their ideas with us so this event can be successful. Young people especially have fresh ideas of what appeals to their counterparts and we want to hear from you. Working on the committee is considered community service and many high school students are required to have community service in their résumés for college.

Springwater American Legion Post 905 will hold their joint meeting at 7 p.m. Tuesday, Jan. 17. The Ladies Auxiliary Unit of Post 905 will meet at 4:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 14, at the Legion Hall to discuss plans for the upcoming pre-Valentine’s Day Dinner that benefits candidates attending Girls State in June. All auxiliary members are asked to attend this meeting if possible as many decisions have to be made prior to the regular meeting on Jan. 17.

On a personal note, I would like to thank the many people who sent messages and came into the Legion Hall on Friday to wish me a happy birthday. It was a great day and one I will remember for a very long time.

Have a great week.
