The Livingston County Democratic Committee met on Wednesday, Dec. 7, in Geneseo and voted unanimously to support junior Sen. Kirsten Gillibrand, in her bid for re-election. Sen. Gillibrand is one of the first senators to post all of her daily work and meetings on her official website. She has also been a strong supporter of many issues that directly affect the people in this area. All registered Democrats are invited to attend the monthly meetings held in Geneseo in the County Office Building on the first Wednesday of every month.

The Springwater American Legion will open Thursdays through Sundays at noon and begin serving lunches on Dec. 31. The new kitchen has been completed in the pub area — a real labor of love for many of us this past year — and will officially open to serve modestly priced lunches and snacks New Year’s Eve. Everyone is invited to come in and check out the newest addition to the Post. The complete menu is being formulated now and will be advertised in the Dansville-Wayland PennySaver. A new staff member has been added and looks forward to meeting and serving you in the weeks ahead.

The Springwater American Legion will hold their final meeting for 2011 on Tuesday, Dec. 20, at 7 p.m. at the Post home. All Legion members and Ladies Auxiliary members are welcome. The SAL Squadron of Post 905 will hold their meeting on Thursday, Dec. 15, at 7 p.m. per SAL Commander Paul Hergenroder. SAL members are urged to attend this meeting so events for 2012 can be decided.

As the holiday approaches, please remember to let Katherine or me know of your groups’ events so we can publish them in our column. This is a busy time for our churches and our families. We so enjoy sharing with our readers what is happening in our town.

Have a great week and stay safe.

Take a time off from your busy schedule (no need to prepare dinner, no need to do dishes, except for those of us that work) to attend the Websters Crossing United Methodist Church Spaghetti Dinner and Music Jam the third Thursday of the month, Dec. 15. It is by donation and begins at 4:30 p.m. Food is served until 7 p.m., but the musicians are willing to play their instruments until everyone is satisfied. We look forward to having you come.

If you have not obtained a Christmas tree or wreath yet for the season, you know you are welcome at the All Western Evergreen Farm on Liberty Pole Road or any of the other Christmas tree farms in the neighborhood. Did you know that tree growers plant two or three trees for every one that is cut and that young trees use up more carbon dioxide and give off more oxygen in the process of photosynthesis than old trees do as they grow, just as children have more energy than adults? Not only that, but Christmas trees are grown like corn, to be harvested. A real tree helps the environment, while a fake tree made from petrochemicals in a foreign land will last in the land fill forever. Here we put our own people to work.

Though cold, the hike at Sugarbush Hollow in Southeast Springwater this past Sunday was a real treat for everyone that attended. Chuck Winship was an excellent host and participants were treated to a great hike on the land and also at his new home for the after hike social. The next hike will be on Sunday, Dec. 18, at 2 p.m. sharp. If road names like Pokey Moonshine Road and Devil’s Slide Road sound appealing to you, you will not want to miss this week’s hike. We’ll start near the south end of Harpers Ferry Road at the bend on top of the hill. That intersection is known as the upper end of the old Devil’s Slide Road. Some experienced residents tell of a time when they used to take cars down that way. Not anymore. It’s a beautiful 300-foot elevation change down to Pokey Moonshine Road (a.k.a., Pokamoonshine Road). Or, for the Climbers, a nice hike up. Depending on conditions, this hike is primarily designed for hiking boots and will make use of roads, paved and dirt. The Flatlanders will hike some three miles, the Tourists 4.5 and the Climbers ... who knows? After the hike, we’ll have an authentic Southwest tailgate party up on the hill. It is really beautiful up there and you will not want to miss this one. Find details by checking the town’s website, www.townofspringwaterny.org and click on Calendars. New hikers are always welcome and the after hike social is full of interesting people, stories, and food. This is the last hike in the fall series and the next series will not start until the middle of January.

At Websters Crossing United Methodist Church this past Sunday, we hosted an excellent vocalist, Jeff Hunt of Oneida who also took his song message to Allen’s Hill UMC a few weeks ago. Other churches may want to host him in our area. Jeff’s contact number is 315-264-7215.

On Tuesday, Dec. 13, the Springwater–Websters Crossing Historical Society Meeting at the Legion Hall featured Christmas music by Ralph Hamilton of Websters Crossing and his friends. Participants brought stories about their Christmas ornaments or traditions to share with those who attended. The dish-to-pass dinner was delicious, as usual. The next meeting will not be until February, so watch for details.

Those who attend the Trust in the Lives of Older Women programs owe a debt of gratitude to Marian Crawford for obtaining excellent folks who are willing to share their life stories. They meet the first and third Wednesdays of the month from 12:30 to 2:30 p.m. at the Wayland Gunlocke Free Library. If you are interested in attending, know that the group is willing to have others come, and there is no cost or membership regulations.
