In the last few weeks, I have noticed several stray pets listed in the “LOST and FOUND” column of The Spectator. Don’t rely on finding their owners. This is the time of year that thoughtless, selfish people discard these animals that they don’t want anymore!
I know this because in January 2017, someone disposed of a mother cat and her kittens in my neighborhood. I called three veterinarians, the Hornell Humane Society, and two cat rescue groups about these animals, and I was told that they would put traps on my property to catch them, have them spayed and neutered (at my expense) and then return them to my property. These animals were NOT my responsibility, so I opted not to do that!
As time passed, one by one they were killed by speeding cars, froze or starved to death, and were either maimed or killed by other wild animals. We have coyotes, foxes, fishes, raccoons, skunks, etc. in our neighborhood. There are still two of these cats in the area that have survived on mice, moles, chipmunks and birds. They are now feral (wild) cats!
My neighborhood in a rural cluster of houses, barns and other buildings, and I'm certain the wicked, selfish person who disposed of these cats “thought” that someone would take them in. However, we have our own pets - well cared for, healthy, and safe. We don’t need some unneutered, unvaccinated, unhealthy, unwanted animals that can bring diseases to our pets. Cats can carry rabies, distemper, feline leukemia, fleas, ticks, mange and other contagious diseases. We are not about to introduce those dangerous conditions to our homes and beloved pets.
So, if you or your friends are considering doing this with your unwanted pets, who love you, but you do not reciprocate, take them to the Hornell Humane Society, Lollypop Farm, or any of the cat rescue groups in our area, or in Avon or Geneseo in Livingston County. They will have them spayed or neutered, vaccinated, vet checked and ready for adoption in a loving home. Please do not dump them in rural areas, to fend for themselves in frigid weather. That is about the cruelest thing anyone can do, and it is illegal! These are God's creatures, too, and deserve better.
