Agnes L. Mazzola, 99, passed away Monday, Aug. 6, 2012, at the Conesus Lake Nursing Home where she had resided for five months.

Agnes was born May 10, 1913, in Rochester, the daughter of Christian and Ingeborg (Hansen) Larsen. She grew up in Rochester and resided in several different areas throughout her life that included Geneseo, Auburn, Hastings-on-Hudson and then Springwater for the majority of her life. Agnes’s family purchased land in Springwater in 1934 as vacation property and slowly transitioned it to a permanent residence that is still owned by her family. Agnes and L. Charles Mazzola were married in June 1932 and together they enjoyed 48 years together prior to his passing in 1980.

Agnes was a librarian at the Dansville High School for many years. Upon her retirement from the school, she began a career at Wayland Free Library working there for several more years. Agnes’s love for education was obvious as she earned an master’s degree in library science from SUNY Geneseo and attended the Athenaeum for a number of years, along with teaching summer school at SUNY Geneseo. Through SUNY Geneseo, Agnes met and mentored many students, especially foreign students that she kept in contact with throughout the years. She was engaged in assisting the future generations and will be missed by many.

Agnes was an avid reader, reading a book every two-three days. She enjoyed attending local theatre productions with friends and she took pleasure in her flower gardens. Agnes was also an active member of the Springwater United Methodist Church for several years.

Agnes was predeceased by her husband, L. Charles Mazzola. She is survived by her children, Christian (Susan) Mazzola of Miami, Fla., Lars (Jane) Mazzola of Geneseo, and Joy Mazzola of East Aurora; her grandchildren, Colin (Dina) Mazzola, James (Erin) Ellis and Jill (Jeffrey) Hahn, Gary (Maura) Antonio; along with five great-grandchildren.

A memorial service will be conducted for Agnes at 11 a.m. Saturday, Oct. 6 at the Springwater United Methodist Church in Springwater with the Rev. Ray Shaw officiating. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Agnes L. Mazzola fund established at the Wayland Free Library, 101 West Naples St., Wayland, NY 14572. Agnes and her family have been assisted by the St. George-Stanton Funeral Home, 109 West Naples St., Wayland.
