Finger Lakes Soaring Club, Inc. will be holding the Soaring Society of America Region 3 Championship Aug 18-25 at Dansville Municipal Airport.
The championship is a glider race in which some of the top pilots from the Midwest and Northeast gather to compete over a one week period. Soaring tasks will be flown each day starting with the launch of gliders at around 11:30 a.m. and concluding with the return of gliders in mid- to late-afternoon.
Gliders will be towed to 2,000 feet above the airport and then will depart the area on their assigned tasks, some of which will take more than three hours and cover several hundred miles across New York and northern Pennsylvania. Pilots score points for the number of miles flown within a 2-3 hour time constraint, with the fastest pilot covering the most miles gaining the highest score. Points are accumulated over the week with the highest point total being declared the winner.
The championship will have more than 30 pilots competing. With crews and families, this will bring some 80 visitors into the Dansville area — visitors who have historically have patronized local establishments bringing additional dollars into the local economy.
