Robert “Bob” Riedel, 55, passed away on Jan. 1, 2012, after a long battle with brain cancer, surrounded by his loving family. Bob was a graduate of Hamburg High School and attended Fredonia State College. He was previously the editor of the Genesee Country Express from 1998 to 1999, and then started his own business, Print Matters! Used & Rare Books.

Bob is survived by his loving wife, Cristine (nee Smith); and one son, Samuel. He is the son of Robert (Penny) Riedel and Gail Mercer, and the son-in-law of Cedric (Kate) Smith and Mary Wylie. He is also survived by three sisters, one brother, an aunt, uncle, as well as a sister–in-law, brother-in–law, nieces, nephews and cousins.

Bob was a scout master for Boy Scout Troop No. 38 in Dansville, and was an accomplished musician, playing the guitar, harmonica, ukulele, piano and banjo. Bob’s bands played venues in New York for 13 years, during which time he wrote and performed in excess of 40 original songs. He was also an avid mushroom hunter and discovered a new species of the genus boletus in 1997.

A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Jan. 14, at the United Methodist Church, 5 Chestnut St., Dansville, NY.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Wilmot Cancer Center.
