The National Weather Service in Buffalo has issued an urban and small stream flood advisory for Genesee, Livingston, Monroe and Wyoming counties until 7:45 p.m. Eastern
At 4:47 p.m. NWS doppler radar indicated a large area of thunderstorms with heavy rainfall stretching from the greater Rochester area south and west into portions of Genesee, Wyoming and northern Livingston counties. Radar estimates that 1-2 inches of rain has fallen in the past hour and a half in some areas. Additional rainfall amounts of 1-2 inches are possible in localized areas where thunderstorms persist the longest.
Excessive runoff from thunderstorms will result in minor flooding of poor drainage areas. Very heavy rain and ponding of water on roads will impact the afternoon commute.
Precautionary/preparedness actions
Most flood deaths occur in automobiles. Never drive your vehicle into areas where the water covers the roadway. Flood waters are usually deeper than they appear. Just one foot of flowing water is powerful enough to sweep vehicles off the road. When encountering flooded roads make the smart choice. Turn around. Don’t drown.
