While patrons have been enjoying Dansville Public Library’s new addition, work on the Shepard Memorial building is nearing completion.
An opening date is expected to be less than a month away.
For the past year, the children’s books have been housed in a temporary annex inside the former Reinholtz store on Main Street.
The Shepard Building’s first floor, which formerly contained the entirety of the library’s materials, will become a spacious Children’s section, with the exception of the Reeve room, which will house adult classics and will be used as the library’s board of trustees meeting room.
Library director Terry Dearing said the Main Street Children’s Annex will close for good Dec. 23. The library will then box up the material and spend about a week or more shelving it in its permanent location inside the newly-renovated Shepard building.
When it opens, patrons will come into the children’s section through the main library instead of walking through the familiar Main Street entrance directly into the Shepard Memorial, which so many have been accustomed for decades. That door will remain closed to the public.
When entering the new children’s library via double doors, they will immediately be in the children’s picture book and beginning readers section, which will also house at least one children’s computer.
Facing the front of the building, in what used to be a public computer-access room, children can gather for story time, or mom and dad can peruse a few parenting-related books for themselves.
Next to that room, which had been the non-fiction section, will be the material for older children.
On the other side of the wall, in the room where the children’s section used to be, will now become a room set aside for children’s crafts.
Dearing will return behind there to her familiar office, now also newly-remodelled.
As for the upstairs, it will remain available for public programs, thanks to a newly installed elevator that can suit handicap accessibility.
Besides a new elevator, interior construction work has included a new back stairwell, plus new paint, carpet, floor tile, ceiling, a joined fire and security system and new heating units.
In addition to the interior, the Shepard building has also been undergoing exterior painting, as well as extensive work on its columns and some window replacement.
