The Wayland-Cohocton boys’ basketball team held its championship sports banquet April 1 to celebrate a “dream season.” This year’s boys’ team won the first division title in 41 years, were class BB champions for the first time in 17 years and was the first Livingston Conference team in history to represent Section V at the class B state level in the Far West Regionals.

At the banquet the boys received their state basketball participant certificate, the first boys’ basketball team in school history to accomplish this feat. The boys finished with a class B state ranking of 10th in New York. They were also able to grab a piece of their Championship net given by Section V to all of the champions.

Tim Costello, sales manager for the Northeast and Canada at the Wayland-based Gunlocke Company presented the boys with a $700 check. The check symbolizes how proud the entire community is of the boys and to add to the memories for this dream team by providing the necessary funding needed to purchase plaques for each of its members.

Wayland-Cohocton loses seven seniors who have posted a 35-10 record over two seasons. They received both the Livingston County Sportsmanship Award and the Stueben County Sportsmanship Awards. They proved themselves to be a class act time and time again:

  • Evan Englert, captain.
  • Tyler Thielges, captain.
  • Dean Bembower, captain.
  • Cody Oas.
  • Cody Lang.
  • Dakota Price.
  • Alex “Chippy” Stearns.
