New York State Police say an 8-year-old girl was dragged 900 feet by her school bus when her book bag got caught in the closing door as she got off.
Troopers say the girl, Haley Heath, and her two sisters got off the Danville Central School bus at 2:40 Wednesday afternoon on state Route 436 in Ossian, approximately five miles west of Dansville. The bus driver, John Coley, 62, of Wayland, state police report, "was not paying attention when he closed the door," trapping Haley's backpack. He drove 900 feet before he realized the child was being dragged.
Haley sustained abrasions and was treated at the scene. She was taken home by her mother and later taken to Noyes Memorial Hospital in Dansville.
Another student, Michael Thomas, 8, was still on the bus and standing up when Coley stopped the bus after hearing students yelling to stop. Michael was treated for eye abrasions after he struck the seat in front of him.
Coley is not being charged, according to state police. School officials report he has been placed on administrative leave.
