Taxpayers may be happy to know that the Nunda Police Department just received a brand new $25,000 police SUV with none of its expense coming from the town coffers.
Last February, the department applied for a $22,000 grant through a federal Edward Byrne Memorial Justice Assistance Grant for the purchase of the vehicle, and received acceptance of the grant in July.
With the addition of state DWI reserve funds to cover the rest of the purchase and to equip the vehicle with a few specific modifications – such as lettering, sirens, etc. – the department received a brand new vehicle without impeding on the town’s budget.
The purchase of this vehicle relieves the department of a 2006 Dodge Durango while keeping a 2009 Durango as a secondary vehicle.
Police Chief Jeff Wilcox said the department had one car on hand throughout the department’s history until 2009. With the ability to obtain vehicles through grants, the town and police department decided it would be better to have primary and secondary vehicles available, both being SUVs equipped to handle all the roads in the town.
