The Livingston County Sheriff's Office says people are still hurting in the aftermath of Hurricane Sandy and the department is involved in the relief effort.

"This week, as we celebrate Thanksgiving and give thanks for all of our blessings, it is a great time for us to reach out to people of our state who have been hit so hard by the devastation of Hurricane Sandy and share our blessings with them," said Livingston County Sheriff John M. York.

York on Monday announced a donation drive to collect the most needed items for residents in New York City, Long Island and the surrounding New York counties.

The donation drive is part of a statewide effort organized by the New York State Sheriff's Association.

Donations will be accepted beginning today at 4 Court St., Geneseo, between 8 a.m. and 4 p.m. The collection effort will continue through Nov. 27.

For health reasons, donated items such as towels and blankets should be new. Donations of used items are not being accepted at this time, the sheriff's office said.

The sheriff's office said the need is great for the following items:

New, inexpensive towels and blankets, flashlights, batteries, toiletries, non-perishable foods, cleaning supplies, work gloves, garbage bags, baby wipes and diapers and cases of water.
