Dansville Area Historical Society’s Pioneer Park committee is moving forward with raising funds for a monument for the recently renamed Pioneer Park, formerly Instructor Park.
The historical society has raised more than $6,000 so far for the project, estimated to total betwee $15,000 and $20,000, which includes not only the monument, but also a granite base, benches, lighting and landscaping.
The monument will be placed in the center of the park, where the light pole and flower bed are now. The village of Dansville has agreed to enhance the landscape with vintage lighting and improved sidewalks.
The monument is to dedicate and honor Dansville’s first cemetery, which was established in 1797. When village officials decided to turn the burial ground into a park in 1888, they asked families to remove the remains of their deceased loved ones to Greenmount Cemetery, which had been in operation for about 40 years.
Some, but not all remains interred under Pioneer Park were moved, meaning that some remains are still interred there to this day.
Last week, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church donated $1,000 toward the project, and is challenging other community organizations and individuals to match or exceed its gift.
Contributions to Pioneer Park Fund may be made by sending a check payable to Dansville Area Historical Society, P.O. Box 481 Dansville, NY 14437.
Be sure to write Pioneer Park in the memo line.
Donations may be tax deductible.
