Clarence L. Sahrle, 97, passed away early Sunday morning, Nov. 27, 2011, at his home.

He was born at the Sky Farm in the town of North Dansville, Livingston County, on March 6, 1914, a son of the late Lester and Lovenia (Whiting) Sahrle. He was also predeceased by his wife, Helena Moose Sahrle, and an infant granddaughter in 1970; his second wife, Pauline Lawrence, in 1986; a brother, Robert Sahrle, in 1994; and his son Ronald this past September.

When Clarence was 2 years old, he and his family moved to the homestead in the town of Wayland, Steuben County, and he lived and worked the farm until 1944. He then moved to Dansville with his wife Helena and started the Sahrle Insurance Agency. Clarence and Helena operated the business from their home for 42 years. The agency is now operated as the Wensel Agency in Dansville and Wayland. He was at the same time a nighttime route operator for the Gannett newspapers. Clarence then worked for the U.S. Postal Service daytimes to be able to be home nights to care for Helena who was in failing health. After retirement from the insurance business and the Postal Service, Clarence moved to West Sparta and went back to farming raising beef cattle until 2002, when his health began to fail.

Clarence was the supervisor for the town of West Sparta from 1980 to 1987. He was a member and past president of the Church Council at St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Dansville. He was a member of Phoenix Lodge No. 115 of the F&AM in Dansville. During his business career he was active with the Red Cross blood drives and served as president of Dansville Community Chest.

He is survived by his daughter, Janice Sahrle of Cohocton; his grandchildren, Scott Gould of Rochester, Gregg Gould of Atlanta, Ga., and Nella Helena (Jeffrey) Peacock of Clifton Springs; great-grandchildren, Jared and Grant Gould, Clayton Gould, Chase Peacock and Catherine Helena Peacock; three sisters-in-law, several nieces, nephews, cousins, neighbors to include Francis Smith and Wendy Fast, his special caregiver, Vickie Kramer, and above all his beloved sheltie, “Miss Gracie” who hardly left his side especially during the past few weeks. Miss Gracie was at his side when he crossed the bar.
