WAYLAND - Community members from Wayland on Sunday honored Wayland-Cohocton students who enlisted in the military.
The Hometown Animal Rescue Program and the Wayland American Legion Post 402 hosted the third annual luncheon and fashion show. The fashion show featured models from the Wayland-Cohocton varsity cheerleading and basketball teams.
Kevin Mark, a member of both HARP and the Legion, estimated donations at between $2,500 and $3,000. The proceeds will benefit the two organizations.
The models started the show by dressing in casual outdoor wear donated by the Outdoor Store in Bloomfield, NY. Brands included Carhartt, Carolina Boots and LaCrosse. The models were able to pick out their own clothes, which displayed their creativity and gave the audience a few good laughs.
One couple displayed full body pajamas, complete with a button-up flap in the back; another model held up a “Redneck Briefcase,” a pair of underwear with a stick for a handle.
After a performance of “The Cotton Eyed Joe,” the models quickly changed into formal wear. It was easy to forget the models were high school students as they walked the red carpet in tuxedos and evening gowns. The cheerleaders looked elegant in their floor-length dresses as they were escorted by the basketball players in tuxedos with brightly colored ties and vests.
Host Rochelle Sulli announced the students’ plans after high school. Most plan on attending college.
A few of the students plan on entering the medical field; some are looking to enter the criminal justice field or photography. Others have big plans for themselves including two millionaires and a presidential candidate.
David’s Bridal in Rochester donated wedding dresses for five models, including Olivia Sulli, who were escorted down the red carpet by Tyler Brown and Connor Mark.
Brown, Olivia Sulli and Connor Mark and were honored for their decision to join the armed forces after graduating. Oliva Sulli is entering the Air Force, Connor Mark is entering the Army and Brown will attend SUNY Brockport’s ROTC program before attending the Naval Academy.
Kevin Mark was grateful for everyone who helped put the show together and those who showed up to enjoy the day. “To get people involved, that’s great.” he said. “It’s only going to get better.”
