Wayland will soon have two updated comprehensive master plans. Wayland Town Council adopted revisions to the town's roughly 10-page master plan in August, the result of which was a two-year project for its planning board.

The revisions reflect changes in state laws and policies since the master plan was adopted in 1996, plus other items previously overlooked. A master plan is a set of goals for municipalities to aim toward for the coming years.

“It’s probably the most important thing a planning board can do,” Wayland Town Planning Board Chairman Bob Reigelsperger said, adding that everything a municipality does in the near future should reflect the master plan.

Now, Wayland Village Board approved having Wayland Area Revitalization put together a master plan for them after WAR had initiated the offer. WAR will be conducting a meeting in the coming weeks to decide how to approach developing the plan, WAR President Marian Crawford said.

Wayland Mayor Brian McCoy intends to contribute to the project, and Reigelsperger said he hopes the planning board can make contributions to it as well. The last time the village had a comprehensive master plan was in the 1970s when it was a combined plan for both the town and village. As McCoy noted during the village’s regular board meeting last week, the 1970s plan has “antiquated information” that needs to be updated.

New York has recently recommended municipalities to update their master plans, also recommending that they continually update them every so often.

Town Planning Board meetings

The Town of Wayland Planning Board meets at 7 p.m. on the first Monday of each month in the Town Court. Meetings are open to the public. Reigelsperger has extended an invitation for the public to attend, ask questions and give the board input on upcoming projects.
