Obituary: DeMyrl M. “Red” Harter

DeMyrl M. “Red” Harter, 91, passed away Saturday, Nov. 5, 2011, at Rochester General Hospital.

DeMyrl was born July 17, 1920, in the town of Dansville, Steuben County, a son of Myron and Cassie (Cole) Harter. He was a graduate of the Wayland High School. He was an electrician, retiring in 1982 from Foster Wheeler Corp. in Dansville after 41 years of dedicated service. DeMyrl married Eloise Ess on Jan. 24, 1942; she survives. In addition to his parents, DeMryl was also predeceased by two brothers and two sisters, Donald Harter, Robert Harter, Ruby Brundage and Eloise Swarts.

DeMyrl was a member of the Wayland United Methodist Church and the churches men’s group. He also was a past trustee for the church for 12 years. Demyrl was also a member of the Foster Wheeler 25-year Club, the Wayland Golden Agers and the Dansville-Wayland Spar-Benders (model airplane club).

DeMryl is survived by his wife of 69 years, Eloise; his children, John and Kathleen Harter of Brockport, Beverley and Frank Camps of Canisteo and Rosemary and Dick Nesbit of Wayland; six grandchildren, eight great-grandchildren; three sisters, Illa France of Hornell, Wilma (Frank) King of Arkport and Margaret (Dan) Downey of Livonia; a brother, Tracy (Eva Lynn) Harter of Wayland; a sister-in-law, Leona Harter; several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Friends may call 1-3 and 5-7 p.m. Monday at the Walter E. Baird & Sons Funeral Home, 300 W. Naples St., Wayland, where funeral services will be at 11 a.m. Tuesday. Burial will be in the Village Cemetery, Wayland.

In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to the Wayland United Methodist Church, the Wayland Fire Department and Ambulance or to any organization or hospital which will help families treat cleft palate in children.
