Longtime Wayland-Cohocton area coach and educator Ellsworth “Elsie” Tripp was recognized as the 2012 Wayland Area Distinguished Citizen May 8 in the Wayland-Cohocton High School cafeteria.
The award is annually bestowed upon a Wayland area resident who has dedicated many years of service to the community.
The award is sponsored by Five Star Bank of Wayland, and is coordinated by Wayland and Cohocton Boy Scout Troops and Cub Packs. The breakfast is a fundraiser for the local Troops.
Tom Didas, Distinguished Citizen committee member, introduced Tripp, stating that, “he is definitely well deserving of this award.”
Scout Aziel McHargue from Troop 58 handed Tripp the award during the standing ovation.
Tripp began his acceptance speech by recognizing the Scouts, stating, “if we ever needed a boys and girls organization, we surely need them now,” adding that the Scouts have kept the same high standards for 100 years, and that, “Scouting is a great way of life.”
Tripp then turned his attention to his wife, stating, “I couldn’t do many of these things if it wasn’t for my wife, Virginia. Believe me, she’s put up with a lot.”
He then said that he shouldn’t receive an award for just doing what he loved.
“I love this area, I couldn’t wait to get back here,” he said, calling Cohocton a treasure, adding that when it came to building the sports complex, they didn’t have the money to put it together, but, “the resources were in our people, and that’s the way we can do things.”
He ended his speech by again thanking his wife, by thanking his many friends in the audience, and saying that the most wonderful place in the world “is right here.”
After Tripp’s speech, Brice Pearce, Boy Scout Thunderbird District executive recognized Nancy Levesque, who retired as manager of Five Star Bank of Wayland and retired as chair of the Distinguished Citizen Committee with a glass Boy Scout paperweight for her many years of service to the committee.
Taking her place as committee chair is Ann Fitzpatrick, also of Five Star Bank. She and Didas were recognized with Five Rivers Council Boy Scouts of America glass jars.
