Steuben County emergency management officials were in damage assessment mode Friday in the wake of Thursday's storm.

Officials estimated that several thousand homes remained without electric power as of noon, Friday. A Steuben Rural Electric substation near Addison remained out of service Friday, officials said.

"The majority of what we have in Steuben County is tress down and some homes that had trees fall on them," said Timothy Marshall, acting director of the Steuben County Office of Emergency Services.

Marshall on Friday was touring areas where the storm did the most damage. A very preliminary assessment appears to point to "straight line winds" as the cause of most of the damage. However, Marshall cautioned that he still has several areas to look at, and the National Weather Service still must make an assessment.

Marshall said crews throughout Steuben County are doing storm clean-up today.

A county radio tower sustained a lightning strike Thursday, but Marshall said the emergency communication system is operating at 100 percent.
