Representatives in Congress from the western New York were split on the House Republican budget yesterday.
After voting against the Fiscal Year 2013 House Republican budget Thursday, Congresswoman Kathy Hochul released the following statement:
“There is no question that our nation must get serious about cutting spending, but the House Republican budget voted on today does not add up. We cannot provide trillions in tax breaks to multi-millionaires, Big Oil and corporations that ship jobs overseas and expect to cut the deficit.
“The Republican budget would essentially end Medicare, forcing seniors to pay higher prices for health care and take a cut to benefits, while at the same time giving multi-millionaires an additional $150,000 a year in tax breaks.
“The only way to seriously cut the deficit is by supporting common-sense, bipartisan solutions that balance our budget, like the Balanced Budget Amendment and last year’s compromise to cut the deficit by more than $2 trillion.”
Rep. Tom Reed saod of his vote to support the budget, “I voted in favor of the ‘Path to Prosperity’ budget because it represents a good long-term spending management plan for taxpayers. We are dealing with a national debt of more than $15 trillion and annual deficits which add more than $1 trillion to that debt every year – leaving our children and grandchildren with the bill. We need to be honest about Washington’s spending problem, which is threatening critical programs like Social Security and Medicare. We need to cut spending to have a stable and secure future. Now it’s time for the Senate to present its vision on how to address this spending crisis and give Americans a true choice. ”
