By now everyone is doing their individual after-Christmas tradition. Mine is to write a long overdue after-Christmas letter. Family and friends have been very forgiving over the years and my mailbox continues to be full of greetings even though I have been lax. For this I am most appreciative. Hopefully everyone is looking forward to 2012 as a year filled with opportunities. By taking a look around you, every act of kindness that you do, helps you as well as the recipient.

The next Spaghetti Dinner and Music Jam will be 4:30-7 p.m. Thursday, Jan. 26, and music into the evening.  This is a blessing because many of our regulars will have been waiting six weeks and it will give Pat Martindale time to heal and the rest of us to get our act together on a new note. No pun intended for our fine musicians.

Our prayers are with all who need them, and we especially think of Betty Van Scooter and Mildred Stone who are recuperating. We keep the family of Cat Gannon in our thoughts and pray for acceptance.

You’d think that by now there would be nothing to do on the All Western Evergreen Nursery and Christmas Tree Farm. That is not the case. Like on other tree farms, we must do the taxes: W-2s and W-3s on our employees, sales tax calculations, monthly withholding and a fourth quarter report for the end of the year. Thanks to a computer-savvy son-in-law, the tasks are not as daunting as in the past.

The Springwater Parks and Recreation Group will hike, cross-country ski and showshoe Harriett Hollister Recreation Area on Jan. 1, starting promptly at 2 p.m. For details, contact Ellen Foltz on her cell at 585-750-6288 or log into the website, townofspringwaterny.org, and click on Calendars. New hikers are always welcome and the after hike social is full of interesting people, stories and food. The new hike schedule should be posted within the next few weeks. Also, put on your calendar to go to the Town Hall for the Parks and Recreation Trail Plan at the Town Clerk’s office. Your ideas and comments are sought.

In the New Year, we hope to hear from our readers regarding their news including activities, celebrations, birthdays and anniversaries. Let us know so we can put you on the calendar this year!

Like Katherine, I too have been lax in acknowledging the many wonderful greetings received this season. Many members of my family and several of my friends will receive their greetings late. If I could just figure out how to put that 25th hour into each day, I might stay on top of my correspondence, but since that is not within my power, I am resolving to do better in the coming year. I do hope everyone had a wonderful Christmas filled with the blessings of friends and family.

Christmas was spent with family with the younger members cooking. My only assigned task was baking pies and being present. Thanks to the kindness of a good friend, I traveled to Spencerport to share the holidays with some of the children, grandchildren, and great-grandchildren and had a wonderful time watching the younger ones open their gifts. The youngest great-grandson of 20 months thinks he should wear the bows on his forehead, and he was quite content to remove the bows from every brightly wrapped package before they reached their respective owner. There were no sleds or skis under our tree so no one missed the snow, but for those who are avid lovers of the winter sports, I know it must be difficult to have had a “green” Christmas.

Only a few things are happening here in town this week. The final meeting of the present Town Council occurs this Wednesday evening at 7 p.m. The first meeting, also known as the organizational meeting, of the new council is tentatively scheduled for Jan. 9, 2012, at 7 p.m. in the Town Hall.

The new Americal Legion Post 905 grill opens on Saturday, Dec. 31, at noon. This has been a collaborative effort of so many fine people it is difficult to single out one person to thank for bringing a germ of an idea to fruition. The idea of offering a luncheon menu to our town has been in the works for over two years, and finally the hard work is done. Bring a friend and enjoy a fine selection of good food at a reasonable price. The grill is open to the public.

The next Gala meeting will be held after the ALR meeting on Thursday, Jan, 12, 2012, at 8 p.m. at the Springwater Legion Hall. We need people to come out and to bring their ideas for another successful event. Young people especially are needed as they are the leaders of the future and we want their fresh ideas to make this an event that everyone can take great pride in and that showcases the very best of what Springwater has to offer. There is much to be done before June arrives and it is imperative that we have commitments from people of every age so the festivities appeal to all of our residents.

As the year winds down and we embrace 2012, we reflect on the past year. We have seen losses and gains in our government administration, our families and in our personal lives. One war has ended and another continues in a country that many of us only know about through the media. We have seen our men and women in service go off to foreign countries and return changed forever by what they have experienced. Many will need our support as they transition back to family and civilian life.

Many of us experienced personal losses this year and are still coping with the after effects of those losses. Some of our residents have dealt with illness and are still in need of our prayers for their recovery or acceptance of their diagnoses. A new year is a time for new beginnings and an opportunity to make changes that reflect who we are, and what we want for our futures. Pray for those in need and extend your hand in friendship to those you meet. Give a little of your time to help someone who may be in distress and you will find that kindness returned ten fold. There are many things we, as neighbors, can do to lighten the load of others and at the same time bring about changes in our community that foster a more cohesive togetherness than we have had in several years. Let’s work together to re-instill the sense of pride that small towns are known for and make Springwater a community people will want to visit and perhaps choose to live in for a long time.

Happy New Year! Stay safe and remember to use caution as our children are out of school this week and will probably be on the roads as the weather permits.
