The Community Blood Drive on Jan. 30 at the Springwater American Legion was a tremendous success with several new faces showing up to donate at our site for the first time. Thank you to all of you who took the time to give the gift of life. The 2012 Community Blood Drive schedule is posted on the town web site general calendar.
On Monday, Feb. 13, the Springwater Town Board will hold its monthly work session at 7 p.m. All residents are invited to attend this meeting where the council members discuss problems, pay the bills and report on the different aspects of town government administration each council member oversees.
The Wayland Free Library has posted its 2012 concert series and the first one is scheduled for Sunday, Feb. 19, at 3 p.m. The Geneseo String Band, from SUNY Geneseo, organized in 1976 as an ensemble within the music department to perform old-time American popular and folk music, especially that characteristic of central and western New York, is scheduled to open the series.
To date the band has performed approximately 1,000 tunes and songs on 30 different instruments. They play a selection of American and Irish folk dance music for square dances, contra dances, and concerts for students and the community. Come early and plan on tapping your toes to this lively performance.
Saturday, March 3, the annual “Boup” Reynolds chili cook-off will kick off at 4 p.m. with judging beginning at 5 p.m., Prizes will be awarded and food is available. A fee of $5 is charged for all entries. Hot dogs will be available for the famous “chili dogs” so many people request every year.
The Springwater Gala Committee will meet on Thursday, Feb. 9, at 8 p.m. at the Springwater American Legion. We still need input from the community on how we can make this year’s Gala successful.
Several people have asked this question this week, so once again, any event hosted by the Springwater American Legion is open to the public. The Post 905 Grill is open to the public Thursdays through Sundays from noon until closing, and the Friday night dinners are always open to the public. Take outs are available and meals can be ordered ahead by calling 585-669-2300.
Have a great week.

Mark Hopkins has provided some information to pass along to you regarding the Springwater Parks and Trails hike on Sunday, Feb. 5. Twenty-five hikers and four dogs met at Pam Masterson’s home and hiked three routes through the state forest surrounding the Canadice Lake Outlet. In spite of the lack of snow for this winter hike, everyone enjoyed being outside. Thirteen hikers in the advanced Climbers group earned their name covering three miles to the 19th century cemetery on Canadice Hollow Road. The 12 Tourists and Flatlanders hiked together to enjoy the woods walk along the outlet stream in several directions. Only once did they need to use a rope to climb down and up the steep banks of a rivulet entering the main channel. They saw the remains of an old sawmill sluice near an ox-bow, wire fence for sheep now buried in tree trunks, the embankments for roads washed out during the 1972 floods, the historical settlement of Dixon Hollow, and gorgeous stream views, with sounds of the rushing water far below and layers of spongy duff under their feet. The hike was also hosted by Rick and Ellen Osiecki.

At 2 p.m. Feb. 12, the hike is at All Western Evergreen Nursery & Christmas Tree Farm on Liberty Pole Road. We are looking for a few inches of snow to cover the trees and make for another great hike. Look for a description on the town calendar at townofspringwaterny.org or call Ellen Foltz 585-750-6288.
Stone Soup will be served at the Websters Crossing United Methodist Church at 6 p.m. on Ash Wednesday, Feb. 22, with the service at 7 p.m. The congregations and area people from Conesus, Springwater and Websters Crossing usually attend. Feel free to come and bring a dish to pass to go along with the soup. The Spaghetti Supper and Music Jam is at the church the next day, Feb. 23, as usual, and everyone is invited.
