Twenty-five members of the extended Tripp family gathered for Thanksgiving dinner on Thursday. Somehow everyone’s work schedules allowed for time off at the same time, and that added to the joy of seeing family members and spending time with them. Two turkeys and a ham plus a plethora of assorted side dishes brought in by various family members, added to the bountiful table. The weather cooperated and the young ones had a good time burning off their excess energy before they left for home. I do hope all of you had a glorious holiday and that your respective schedules allowed for some time to visit with your family and friends.
As we prepare to turn the calendar to December, there are a few things going on in our town that are noteworthy:
- Sunday, Dec. 4, 7 p.m. at Springwater Church of the Nazarene the Christmas Ecumenical Concert of Area Churches will perform. Admission is free but all are asked to bring a canned or boxed food item to be donated to the Wayland Food Cupboard. Refreshments will be served after the concert.
- Monday, Dec. 12, the Springwater Town Council meeting will be at 7 p.m.
- Wednesday, December 14, the Springwater–Websters Crossing Historical Society will hold their annual Christmas program. A dish-to-pass dinner precedes the event at 6:30 p.m. at Town Hall. All are welcome to attend this program. The SWCHS will not meet again until April 2012.
- The same evening, Dec 14, the monthly meeting of the Livingston County American Legion will be at the Springwater Post 905 on School Street. Dinner precedes this event and will be served at 6 p.m. All legion members are encouraged to attend. The meeting begins promptly at 7 p.m.
- Thursday, Dec. 15, the Springwater American Legion will hold their annual senior luncheon. This is open to all seniors in the area and it is requested that canned or boxed food items, or cleaning supplies to be donated to assist the Post in filling Christmas baskets for those who need some assistance during the holidays. Lunch will be served at 12:30 p.m. and the doors will open at 11:30 a.m. for those who care to arrive a bit early. Please RSVP to 585-669-2683 by Dec. 12, so I can have a rough idea of how many plan on attending.
- The Springwater American Legion will serve dinners 5-8 p.m. every Friday in December. After a busy day at work or holiday shopping, bring the family and enjoy a warm dinner.
- Every Sunday, the Springwater Post hosts NFL Sundays with food and football. The doors open at 1 p.m. Come watch the action on a big-screen TV.
- The Springwater Post Office has set up a container to accept magazines for the troops in Afghanistan. They need not be the newest editions, especially if they have to do with hunting, fishing, cars, guns or sports.

Have a great week and do let Katherine or I know what is going on with your holiday programs and meetings.

A dedicated group of parishioners attended the dedication of the 100th Anniversary Quilt and the completion of the new church steps into the sanctuary on Sunday, Nov. 27. Both our present pastor, Leonard Broseker, and our former pastor, Jeri Kober, were on hand at 1 p.m. for the ceremony followed by a dish-to-pass luncheon.
Teri of Material Rewards in Dansville was instrumental in assisting on the completion of the quilt. Pat Coykendall of Livonia did the hand quilting and was able to attend as well. The beautiful wooden quilt hanger was made out of a 10-foot, 1-inch piece of oak by Don Saxton of Cohocton. Jan Longacre and Stephen Scheiderich put up the hanger and hung the quilt. The quilt measures 123 inches by 89 inches on the north wall of the sanctuary.
Each family in the church congregation has a square, many of them with beautiful photographs, designs and names embroidered into the fabric. Paula Longacre completed the lettering on the heading for the quilt and Pat Coykendall stitched the Methodist flame in each corner. The forest green background was selected by Sylvia Pifer and Katherine Humphrey and borders each of the squares and the whole quilt.
In gorgeous weather, at least a dozen people hiked the lands of the Springwater Meditation Center on Mill Road on Sunday, Nov. 27. They saw the creek and waterfalls, the trails through the woods behind the lodge and the lower fields. The social after in the lodge was most enjoyable. The next hike in December is on the east slope of Scribner and Giles roads in Springwater begins at 2 p.m. sharp so arrive a little early. A dish-to-pass after-hike social are in the works so plan to share or bring some money to donate toward the purchase of plates and other amenities. Find details by checking townofspringwaterny.org toward the end of the week, under Parks and Recreation and clicking on the calendar. New hikers are always welcome and the after hike social is full of interesting people, stories and food.
Does anyone know who left a blue trench coat at the Springwater United Methodist Church after the Turkey Dinner on Oct 22? The owner may call the church at 585-669-2131 or Sue Walker at 585-519-5731 to arrange pick up.
Judy has mentioned in her column some details about the Springwater–Websters Crossing Historical Society Christmas program for Dec. 13. I just want to add that everyone is invited to bring an ornament and the story behind it to share as part of the program. See you at Town Hall.
The United Methodist Women of Websters Crossing will meet for their dish-to-pass Christmas Dinner on Wednesday, Dec. 7, at Laura White’s home on May Road (Tracy and Biddia White’s previous home). Contact person is Pat Martindale, 585-669-2457.
Plan to attend the Christmas Gospel Sing at 7 p.m. Saturday, Dec. 10, at Websters Crossing United Methodist Church on state Route 15 between Conesus and Springwater.
Marian Crawford of Wayland announced the Trust in the Lives of Older Women programs for Dec. 14 at 12:30 p.m. at the Wayland Free Library when Jessie Barth of Perry, author of a book “Mount Morris: Patriotic People, Vibrant Memories, Bustling Businesses” will present her story.
