New York State Department of Transportation Commissioner Joan McDonald yesterday announced the completion and opening of the Route 36 bridge over Rock Spring Creek in the town of W. Sparta, Livingston County. Traffic had been detoured onto Interstate 390 since May 2, while the old bridge, located about one mile north of McMaster Road, was removed, and the new structure was built.

"The goal for this project was to remove, replace and re-open the roadway before the Labor Day weekend and we are proud to say that we met that goal,” Commissioner McDonald said. “Route 36 is a well-traveled roadway for thousands of visitors destined for the New York State Festival of Balloons in Dansville.  Residents will be pleased to know this bridge will serve the community for many years to come.”

The original structure was built in 1910 and had displayed significant signs of age and deterioration. The replacement bridge has an anticipated 75 year lifespan. A side street, Eastview Road, was re-directed to intersect with Route 36 off of the bridge structure allowing for a much narrower bridge consisting of two 12 foot wide travel lanes and 8 foot wide shoulders. This replacement project took four months to complete.

New York State Senator Catharine Young said, "Travel will be safer and more convenient because of this bridge. Phrases such as 'on time' and 'on budget' are what every resident and business want to hear when a project like this is completed.  I thank all the local officials, DOT and Babcock Enterprises for planning and building a modern, safe structure that will accommodate the region for generations to come."

“Maintaining and replacing New York’s infrastructure are important for the safety and accessibility of the motoring public,” said Assemblyman Dan Burling. “I am very pleased that the Department of Transportation was able to replace the Rock Creek bridge with a new structure, on-time, and within budget. Those who travel regularly on Route 36 will be pleased with the new bridge and the wise investment in our local highway infrastructure.”

The prime contractor for this $700,000 contract to replace this structure was Babcock Enterprises of Dansville, Livingston County.
