Livingston County Sheriff John M. York was a victim Friday, as he had two loaded guns and a Taser stolen out of his unmarked vehicle while shopping in Henrietta with his grandchildren.
Monroe County Sheriff Deputies said York’s vehicle was parked just outside Macy's department store at Marketplace Mall when the passenger side window was smashed in.
Deputies said two loaded .45-caliber handguns were stolen, a Taser, camera, sunglasses and other items in the vehicle were damaged.
Deputies did not comment about York having the loaded weapons in the vehicle with children. Corporal John Helfer, public information officer for Monroe County Sheriff's Office, said Tuesday that their office is investigating the stolen property and damaged window, not the matter of children being in a vehicle with weapons.
York told the Express by phone Wednesday morning that he responds to calls 24/7, and that it would be irresponsible for him to not be prepared. Regarding having children in a vehicle with weapons, York said he is "very capable" of handling weapons safely with his grandchildren present.
York said that upon further investigation, there have been more than 90 break-ins in the last 30 days in the Jefferson Road area and that this time, he said, the thieves picked the wrong car to break into.
According to investigations, two suspects have been identified as the perpetrators of the break-ins, plus another suspect has been identified for disposition of much of the stolen property over the course of the past month, he said.
York reported the incident when he left the mall and arrived at his vehicle.
