David MacKenzie Rittenhouse of Dansville died suddenly of a heart ailment at his home Jan. 25, 2012, at the age of 60.
Dave was born in Rochester and he grew up in Scottsville, where he was class valedictorian. He attended the University of Rochester, where he studied ancient Greek and Latin. He spent his junior year abroad at the American School of Classical Studies in Athens, Greece, and graduated with high distinction.
After serving six years in the U.S. Navy and earning his Master of Business Administration from University of Buffalo, David joined the U.S. Department and worked in Bureau of Diplomatic Security. He served in many capacities at numerous posts throughout the world. He was a courier for two years in Frankfort, Germany, and assistant resident in charge of security at the U.S. Embassy in Khartoum, Sudan, for 18 months, prior to the embassy being closed due to unrest. He was head of security for two years at the U.S. Embassy in Kiev, Ukraine, and for three years he investigated passport and visa fraud at the Diplomatic Security Service Office in Chicago, Ill.
Dave was multilingual and a collector of Soviet artifacts, some of which were exhibited at the Memorial Art Gallery at University of Rochester. He was devoted to his Ukrainian boxer, Blazer, who died in 2011 at the age of 14. Dave was a kind, generous, thoughtful, hard-working man. He had a great sense of humor, a deep well of knowledge of a large range of subjects and an unflagging zest for life. He will be sorely missed by all who knew him.
Dave is survived by his devoted sister, Candace (John); loving sister, Christanne; and sister, Rosemary; brothers, Jonathan (Suzanne) and Jeremy; loving niece, Jana; six nephews; treasured friends, Kim and Charlie Swink and extended families in Dansville, and Kostiantyn Starosyla and family of Kharkiv, Ukraine; a host of close relatives and friends in western New York and around the world.
Friends may call 2-4 and 7-9 p.m. Friday, Feb. 3, at the Sullivan Funeral Home and Cremation Center, 4 Perine St., Dansville. A memorial service will be at 11 a.m. Saturday, Feb. 4, at the Little Church of Tuscarora in Tuscarora with a luncheon to follow. Memorial contributions may be made to the Wounded Warrior Project (www.woundedwarriorproject.org).
