WAYLAND — Norbert D. “Zeke” Evans, 73, passed away peacefully Sunday, Jan. 20, 2013, at Baylor Medical Center in McKinney, Texas.

Zeke was born Oct. 3, 1939, in Wayland, a son of Richard B. and Onnilee (Shetler) Evans. He was a graduate of Wayland Central School. He was a veteran of the U.S. Army, serving 1963-1969. He worked at Gunlocke Chair Factory for 20 years; then was a Bar Steward at the Bryant Hotel for 33 years. He was an umpire for over 40 years; working at local high school games, men’s leagues and Babe Ruth leagues. Zeke was one of the first paramedics in New York state, attending the first training school offered in the state and he worked for the National Ambulance Service for three years.

Zeke was a life member of the Wayland Fire Department and Ambulance having served for 35 years. He also was a member of the Vietnam Veterans of America, a member of the Wayland American Legion for over 20 years. Zeke received the President’s Call to Service Award in 2002 and the Hometown Heroes Community Award in 2006.

Zeke enjoyed skydiving, baseball, traveling to and organizing many military programs; he was instrumental in bringing the Vietnam Veterans Memorial Traveling Wall to Wayland in 2004, but most of all he loved spending time with his family and many dear friends.

Zeke is survived by his children, Richard N. (Allison) Evans and Laura (Eric) Westbrook; four grandchildren, Amanda and Alayna Evans and Patrick and Sara Westbrook; his sisters, Patricia Porter and Colleen Moffatt; many nieces, nephews and cousins. Zeke was predeceased by three brothers, Norman, Dennis and Michael Evans.

Friends may call 2-4 and 6-8 p.m. Friday at the Walter E. Baird & Sons Funeral Home, 300 W. Naples St., Wayland, where funeral services with full military honors will be held at 11 a.m. Saturday. Burial will be in Evergreen Cemetery, Springwater.
