The 2011 Exhibit for Peace, featuring artwork created by members of Genesee Valley Citizens for Peace, is in its final weeks of display in Apartment One Gallery at Livingston Arts Center. Assistant Professor Justin Behrend, of SUNY Geneseo History Department, will offer a free lecture, Martin Luther King, Jr. and Peace at 3 p.m. Sunday, Jan. 22.
On Jan. 16, communities reflect on the teachings of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr., who was a prime catalyst of social change through purposeful nonviolence during the American Civil Rights Movement from 1955-1968. The event will be at the Livingston Arts Center at 4 Murray Hill Dr., Mt. Morris, and the galleries will be open for viewing 2-5 p.m.
Dr. King’s principles and accomplishments hold infinite learning and inspirational value, principles which are shared by GVCP. Dr. King said in his 1967 speech against the war in Vietnam, “A true revolution of values will ... say of war: this way of settling differences is not just.” Genesee Valley Citizens for Peace is a nonviolent activist group that was formed in 1972 to help bring an end to the war in Vietnam. As wars dominate the U.S. response to conflict, GVCP continues a long-standing commitment to peace at local, regional and national levels.
The event is free of charge and open to the public. Livingston Arts Center is managed by the Genesee Valley Council on the Arts, whose mission is to improve the quality of life in Livingston County by promoting arts & cultural activities. The arts center is open to the public Wednesday and Fridays 1-4 p.m., Thursdays 1-7 p.m. and Saturdays 10 a.m. - 2 p.m..
