One year ago the Keshequa boys basketball team finished up their season with an 11-9 record as they fell to Marion in the Class C quarterfinals. This year, eighth-year Head Coach Todd Isaman has some higher heights in sight. The Indians have a half-dozen key returners to the 2011-12 lineup.
“We had a great off season this summer and have a great bunch of kids who are all working very hard with many of the doing some work in the weight room,” Isaman said. “That commitment has helped them in their confidence and with their game as well. We have a great mix of guards and big men this year. We can go big, or go small and quick.”
That’s certainly a luxury for any team. Among the key returning veterans are 6-foot-4 forward Cyrus Acciari, 6-foot-2 forward Nick Faulds, 6-foot-3 guard Justin Coates, and three 6-foot guards, Tyler Piraino, Terry Forrester and Tim Cassidy, all of whom are seniors. The top newcomers according to Isaman include 5-foot 11 seniors guard Dylan Gibson, 6-foot-3 senior forward Hunter Grosse, 5-foot-10 senior forward Eguardo Astengo, 6-goot-1 guard/forward Bub Duttweiler, 6-foot-1 junior guard Josiah Scott, 5-foot-10 junior guard Connor Lucas.
Coach Todd will be preaching defense again this season.
“Last year we allowed only 46 points per game. We hope to match or improve on that this year because we know we’re not going to score a ton of points,” he said. “I believe that by playing great defense will give us our greatest chance for success. Last year we were outrebounded by teams, and we’ve lost a couple of big rebounders from last year, so we’ll really have to work hard on the boards this year again. Our kids are excited and they’re ready for the challenge.”
