Health Communities that Care is looking for youth, ages 13 and up, and adults to volunteer for an underage drinking prevention project called Environmental Scanning.

As part of the project, volunteers will attend an online training in January on conducting environmental scans. Volunteer groups of youth and at least one adult will visit local stores that sell alcohol in February or March and look over the exterior and interior of stores to fill out forms that assess the amount and types of alcohol and how it may appeal to youth.

Groups will also look at the types of alcohol and tobacco available in stores, the placement of alcohol and tobacco products and the pricing compared to other beverages.

In addition, groups will be looking for Spice, K2 and other synthetic marijuana products being sold in stores.

After groups make their assessments, participating stores will receive recommendations on improvements that could be made. Teams will revisit stores after two months to see if changes were made.

After the project, reports will be generated and used in presentations, in media and on the Web.

Individuals interested in volunteering can contact Rachel Pena, project director for Healthy Communities that Care, at the Council on Alcohol and Substance Abuse of Livingston County at 585-748-5146 or by email to r.pena17@yahoo.com.
