If smiles on everyone’s faces during the latter portion of the event was any indication as to how the rest of the day went, then it's safe to say kids, parents and businesses enjoyed the inaugural “Kidding Around,” a Main Street event to coincide with the annual New York State Festival of Balloons.

While the program was in conjunction with the festival, it was not officially organized by the balloon festival committee, but was an effort by the Dansville Area Chamber of Commerce to help bring festival-goers to the business district and show them what Dansville has to offer.

The turnout hit its peak during the first few hours of the event, business owners said.

Salome Farraro of Tony's Pizzeria, as well as AJ’s Merchantile co-owners Marsha Backus and Mary Mastin, said it was the best Labor Day weekend their businesses ever had due to the event.

“We’ve heard nothing but great response that kids had something to do today,” Backus said. “And the kids have loved it, just loved it.”

Businesses offered crafts, chalk for sidewalk art, free popcorn at Star Theatre, tasty treat decorating at Tasty Too! Cupcakes and more from 10 a.m. to 3 p.m. Saturday only. Adults enjoyed a wine tasting at Clockworks, in which Jill Kalmar, proprietor, said also went very well.
