Starting in 2013, the Cohocton fire department and other village departments will need to contribute money to cover worker’s compensation claims.

The village will shell out approximately $17,000 to secure its worker’s compensation insurance from Steuben County for 2012, which is determined by the number of filed claims. Though the amount of the contribution is unclear, the fire department and other departments will need to budget funds for the insurance “from now on,” said Mayor Thomas Cox.

The departments will cover the claims coming from their respective departments, he added.

The mayor said most of the claims paid between August 2010 and August 2011 came from the fire department. He added that other municipalities are also having departments cover claims from their own budgets.

A total of three claims were paid out between between August 2010 to August 2011 for the village, with some of the claims dating back several years.

Village officials were unclear whether an employee receiving their worker’s compensation payment cleared the employee to return to work, or whether the employee needed to pass a physical.

In other business, the board:

Discussed the fire department’s bylaws.

Approved a liquor license renewal for the American Legion. Village officials are planning on speaking with Legion leaders regarding several concerns.

Approved the village newsletter.

Approved a USDA pre-application for a grant for a new ambulance.

Approved Dec. 5 as the water shut-off date.
