Veterans Day services occur all across the country on the 11th hour of the 11th day of the 11th month. This year, one local service will occur with something very special added.

The townspeople of Cohocton will pause to not only honor all veterans — but also one very special veteran it lost in Afghanistan earlier this year.

U.S. Army Sgt. Devin Snyder, a 2008 Wayland–Cohocton graduate, was killed by a roadside bomb on June 4.

Just a few minutes prior to 11 a.m. Friday, honor guards from Cohocton and Atlanta American Legion Posts will march into the Lawrence Parks Recreation Area to begin a public unveiling of a memorial in her honor. At 11 a.m. sharp, a moment of silence will be given.

The Rev. David Bernard will then lead a prayer; the National Anthem will be sung; and Cohocton Town Supervisor Jack Zigenfus will read a resolution from the town council and make a few brief comments.

The memorial, which will be draped by an American flag, will then be unveiled to reveal a plaque situated on a decorative rock.

The combined honor guards will then fold the flag; Beth Adams and Sarah Zeh will sing, “Wind Beneath My Wings,” and remarks by U.S. Rep. Tom Reed, R-N.Y. District 29, will be read by one of his staff members.

The memorial, which will be centrally located in the park, has been anonymously donated.
