DANSVILLE — The Poags Hole Hillclimb has begun a new chapter in its national legacy this year.

On Aug. 19 the gates open at 9 a.m. and races start at 12:30 p.m. for the 22nd Annual Poags Hole Hillclimb. There will be 41 open bike racers and 32 X-Game racers.

Poags Hole Hillclimb owner Mike Mistretta said that he sat down with the American Motorcycle Association in California about creating a motor climb super series.

This is a Round 4 Coast to Coast Series that includes California, North Dakota, Wisconsin, and Poags Hole. This will create a national championship among the riders of this professional motorsport.

Mistretta said that he hopes this event will take off this year.

“The American Motrocycle Association handles the east coast to west coast motorsports. They sent someone down to my race last year to promote the event,” he said. “We sat down together and dreamed up this idea to have a National Series.”

Mistretta said that the first two rounds have been very successful, and he has a good feeling about this really taking off.

“There are always some growing pains when you start something new,” he said. “I think this will grow big. It will get the national coverage it deserves. I want to get the hillclimb sport and its riders recognized.”

“The Poags Hole Hillclimb is still the toughest hill in the country,” Mistretta continued. “They consider us the Super Bowl of hillclimbs.”

Mistretta’s brother raced motorcycles back in the 1970s.

“He said let’s do a hillclimb,” Mistretta said. “That is how it all started. We worked two years to get local rules for the town to follow. The first year was cold and rainy and we only had 3,500 people. That was not enough to look out on over the hill.”

Mistretta is looking forward to the event this year. He said there is now over 10,000 fans and 4,000 motorcycles that come to watch this event. There are 39 big bike participants, and 32 X-game participants this year.

Mistretta said the hillclimb is a huge accomplishment for him and his family.

“I think it is a great accomplishment. I didn’t think it would go on as long as it has,” he said. “We are trying to get our kids to take over now. The change of riders has gone on over the years. There are more and more younger riders doing this now. There is a lot of great talent out there. This sport is definitely evolving.”

The Hillclimb has been a featured stop on the American Motorcyclist Association’s Championship schedule and is also sanctioned by the North American Hillclimbers Association. Competitors from one end of the country to the other will be descending upon Dansville in an effort to tame the monstrous hill.
