DANSVILLE — It’s that time of year again when the community gathers for the spring festival.
The 52nd Annual Dansville Dogwood Festival is the highlight of the year for many in the area.
Dogwood Festival Chairman Barry Haywood said the group hopes to expand every year.
This year there are some big additions to the festival. The Battle Street Brewery has a grand opening on May 19 starting at 2 p.m. with beer, food, live entertainment, and tours. The Weiner Dog Race is May 19 at the K’s Canine Training Services starting at 3 p.m. Dog owners are asked to bring them to 138 Main Street at 1:30 p.m. The C.A.N.N. yard sale is May 18 from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. on 43 Elizabeth Street. The Fairy Doors of Dansville is May 19 from 12:30 p.m. to 2 p.m. at Dansville ArtWorks and Dogwood Trading Company. The St. Peter’s Episcopal Church will have a service at the Gazebo in Church Park at 10:30 a.m. on May 20.
“It has been at least 20 years since we had a Sunday Service in the park,” Haywood said. “Everyone is looking forward to that.”
The theme “The Wild, Wild West” is going to be seen in full force at the Combined Float and Firemen’s Parade at 5 p.m. on May 19. Dogwood Festival Committee member Greg Horr is in charge of the parade this year. Horr said there will be about eight floats this year, 10 bands, and of course the fire trucks.
“I think this is going to be bigger than any of our past parades,” he said. “We have a lot more horses this year, because of the theme we chose.”
Horr said he is really excited about it this year.
“This is a great festival,” he said. “It is a great way to start the spring. This festival is still the highlight of the community. It goes on all week long.”
Horr said he is thankful for all the people that help out with it every year.
Haywood said that he is looking forward to making C.A.N.N part of the festival this year.
“Clare VanDurme was very happy to be part of the festival this year,” he said. “She does a yard sale every year around this time, but now she can be part of the event. This gets the word out about what they are doing over there.”
The 38th Annual Bazaar on May 19 from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. is going to be bigger and better this year as it expands to Sunday.
“We started out with only 10 organizations when we did this over 50 years ago,” Haywood said. “We are up to much more now, and it keeps growing every year. This is the longest running community-based festival in the entire area.”
The American Red Cross Chapter One on 57 Elizabeth Street has an open house on May 19 from 2 to 4 p.m. The Dansville Area Historical Society will have an open house May 19 from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Mr Scribbles will be at Dansville ArtWorks from 11 a.m. to 4 p.m. on May 19. The Dogwood Festival Wild West 5k registers at 8 a.m. and starts at 9 a.m. at the Dansville American Legion on May 19. The whole week is fun for the entire family with lots to do in the community. Don’t forget to check out the Carnival all week at Babcock Park.
