This past Saturday at the Dansville High School pool, the Dansville Rotary Club and Danvsille Community Center sponsored the third annual Sunshine Swim Meet. The Sunshine Swimming event allows children with intellectual and developmental disabilities an opportunity to experience the sport of swimming.
After photographs by Laura Kreiley and Kellie Schuster, warm-up exercises, and Sidney Martin sang the national anthem, the meet began with announcer Alexandrea Kendall introducing the swimmers along with their buddies. Each swimmer had a buddy with them throughout the meet from the Dansville Mustang and Wayland-Cohocton Varsity Swim Teams. The meet was coached by James Welch Jr. and Heather Clark.
The swimmers who participated in the meet were Eva Marie Cardona Escobar, Marie Beardsley, Destinee Woodworth, Jarred Woodworth, Madison Wood, Patrick Clark, John Paul Brushafer, Emily Brushafer, Sarah Brushafer, Shania Guyett, Tori Westfall, John Woods, Eli Barrett, and Lindsey White. Retired Sunshine Swimmers Kristen Guyett and Ashlee Acomb were assistant lifeguards for the meet.
The first events of the day were races across the width of the pool in the shallow end. During intermission the crowd was entertained by an exhibition of diving by Emily O’Connor, Taylor Mann, and Marissa O’Connor. The meet concluded with the racing events going the full length of the pool. No swim meet would be complete without pizza as a reward while the swimmers awaited the medal presentations and their chance to stand on the winner blocks.
