Geneseo Central School freshman Claire Allen struck by vehicle while running during cross country practice
GENESEO —The investigation into the death of a Geneseo Central School freshman in an accident Thursday continues, but no charges have been filed so far, the Livingston County Sheriff’s Office said Friday.
Also Friday, the school district posted a statement about the accident, which claimed the life of student Claire Allen, on its website. The district said the accident happened around 4:30 p.m. Thursday, while Allen was running on Route 39 with a teammate during cross country practice.
“Claire was a ninth-grader who was amazingly bright and energetic. She was an incredibly kind and gentle friend to her classmates. She was involved in many activities in our school and community,” the statement read. “This tragedy has deeply impacted us all. We have counseling support readily available for all of our students and staff today (Friday) and, if needed, throughout the weekend.”
Dougherty said the driver of the vehicle has been identified as Holly Mullen, 51, of Geneseo.
“Cell phone use and driver impairment have been ruled out. The preliminary investigation does not substantiate any charges at this time,” Dougherty said in a press release.
“The preliminary investigation revealed that the victim was running northbound on Route 39 (Avon Geneseo Road), on the west-side shoulder (against traffic) when she and her running partner were attempting to cross the road and return back to the school,” Dougherty said. “The victim did enter the roadway of the southbound lane of Route 39 and was struck by the vehicle, a Subaru Crosstrek.”
