DANSVILLE — After covering the art center from its grand opening at the old Dansville Stationer nearly two years ago to its decision to go back to its old roots it has been a journey.

Dansville Artworks will be moving back to the place it originally called home located at 153 Main Street on Aug. 31. The grand re-opening will be held Sept. 2.

They will have current artists/consignors pick up artwork at 178 Main Street on Aug. 12  from 2 to 3 p.m. or on Aug. 19 from 4 to 6 p.m. The accepted fall exhibit items and Sept/Oct consignment items will be received at 153 Main Street after Aug. 19 as per submission paperwork (coming soon). Dansville ArtWorks volunteers will not be moving any artwork between locations.  With the new space, they will have room for more consignment artists, exhibiting artists, performers, and workshops. We will continue to provide solo exhibit space - which will include a window display for the solo artist!   Since the success of the art center they are in need of more room, so the Dansville Artworks board members have chosen to go back to their roots.

Genesee Country Express reached out to Dogwood Trading Company Owner Susan DeMuth to see how she felt about the move.

"It is a really good opportunity for them, and will give them space to grow," she said. "I will still keep in touch with all of them."

DeMuth said she is going over various options for the store once the are moved out. Some of these include a craft shop or antique store.

"We (Randy and Susan) are going on vacation soon and will think about it," she said. "We have thought about a craft shop or antique store. I used to teach craft classes, so I could go back to doing that."

DeMuth said she wants something in there by the Dansville Balloon Festival so there isn't an empty storefront by her shop.

"Angelica has lots of cute antique shops, so that has inspired us," she said. "Dansville needs little shops like that."

Parallel to ArtWorks’ need for more room were changes 153 Main building owner Shannon Mays was planning for her business, Spinnanagan’s, located in the same building. Coincidentally, ArtWorks rented from Mays previously in December 2014 for its “test” pop-gallery.

“My spin exercise classes have steadily grown, and I had various ideas of how to utilize the building’s space differently. When ArtWorks’ board of directors approached me, I was encouraged by the timing of our similar needs," Mays said. "I know that ArtWorks has been a positive addition to Main Street, Dansville, and I am thrilled to partner with them (again!) to accommodate their growth and continued presence in our community.”

Dansville ArtWorks’ board president Nicole Alioto said, “We have been fortunate to partner with Susan and Randy DeMuth over the past two years. Their storefront provided us a wonderful place to build the foundation of the community arts center, and their graciousness and continual promotion of Dansville ArtWorks to their customers has been invaluable. We will miss them, but know we are all committed to the same thing … successful downtown Dansville businesses. As for moving to the larger space at 153 Main, it’s like going home.”

The 153 Main Street location will continue to provide exhibit and performance space, retail space for consignment artists, and an enhanced workshop space that will allow for a wider variety of classes.

Dansville ArtWorks will soon undertake a Here We Grow campaign to offset expenses that the relocation will incur and to bolster promotional efforts during the third year of operations. Donations are welcome at store.DansvilleArtWorks.com or via postal mail at PO Box 741, Dansville, NY, 14437.
