DANSVILLE — It has been a source of family pride for nearly 20 years, and it all started with a dream and the passion to make it happen.

Skip's Custom Flooring has spent most of that time growing and has two shops up and running.

This family-operated business started its journey in a van, moving to a small shop on Dock Street, and finally finding a home on Maple Street.

Skip's Custom Flooring Owner Skip Wolfe, his wife Cathy, and his son’s John and Joe Wolfe are providing quality flooring to everyone in the area as well as surrounding areas.

“I had worked in other flooring shops for 15 years, before I started my own business in 1998,” Skip Wolfe said. “I worked out of my van for the first two years, and in 2000 I purchased the old laundromat on Dock Street and it was established as Skips Custom Flooring. I built that up for eight  years, and then we leased this building (in 2008) and John started helping me with installations. About three years ago Joe came on board, and started helping with marketing.”

Since the family business had a loyal customer base, and there was a strong need for expanding they created another shop in Naples.

Joe Wolfe runs both the Naples and Dansville showrooms.

“Our business goes from the Rochester area to the Corning area,” he said. “We do have people call out of state for our products too.”

Skip Wolfe said that no one in the city does what they do. The big box stores are not going to give you the familiar feeling of a family owned store.

The Naples store has been up for a couple of years, and it helps supply material to the Cohocton and Wayland areas as well.

“I got it from a bid in Naples Town Hall,” Skip Wolfe said. “It took about a month to get the showroom ready. We lease that building from the (Naples) Masonic Lodge, and they are a great group of guys. We do a lot of work in Cohocton and Naples anyway.”

There are many different products available for flooring; carpet, tiles, wood, bamboo, cork, and vinyl. With the over two decade experience Skip Wolfe knows what kind of floor to recommend for each room.

“Cork has become very popular,” Joe Wolfe said. “It is warmer and quieter, and it holds up really good. It is a very green product, since it only strips the bark off the trees.”

Skip Wolfe added that cork is mixed with vinyl to give it a better hold.

Skip's Custom Flooring is aligned with Shaw Gallery, so that gives better distribution and prices.

“This has doubled production in our showrooms,” Joe Wolfe said. “It gets a lot of people comparing apples to apples.”

Skip Wolfe added he and his sons have created a fair playground that explains the products to people, and the difference between them.

“I never anticipated we would be this busy, and my boys would be working with me,” he said. “I was just trying to feed my family. We are at a comfortable spot now, and the economy is going good.”

“We really care about what goes into our customer’s homes,” Joe Wolfe said. “We have a lot of repeat customers.”

All of the stores in the area are good about helping each other out, and they have created a network amongst themselves.

Skip Wolfe has always made it his priority to offer his customers quality products at reasonable prices. Always keeping up with the latest trends and changing up the Showroom to promote new and giving his customers an excellent job.
