About 150 people gathered at the Springwater American Legion Post 905 on Saturday for the Fall Sportsman’s Raffle. Proceeds from this raffle are used to support Legion charitable projects and this year brought people from as far away as Irondequoit to support these efforts. The Spring Sportsman’s Raffle is tentatively set for the last weekend in March 2013 just before trout season officially opens.
Members of the Stanley Payne family including 3-year-old granddaughter, Brianna, joined more than 9,000 people in Rochester for the annual Making Strides Against Breast Cancer fundraiser for the American Cancer Society. These walkers made their way from Frontier Field to the Liberty Pole on East Main Street and back again and raised over $600 in sponsor’s fees. The walk raised $805,000 that will go to support services for individuals diagnosed with cancer and for research into prevention, treatment, risk-reduction and most importantly, a cure.
October is Breast Cancer Awareness month and as someone whose family has lost loved ones because of this horrible disease, and nearly lost a beloved grandson to kidney cancer, I encourage everyone to get their required screenings. Ben Franklin said “an ounce of prevention is worth a pound of cure“: and many agencies will offer free screenings for people who do not have insurance or who are underinsured. Take advantage of these offerings because the cost of fighting this disease both financially and emotionally can bankrupt a family.
Sad news was received on Tuesday from Homer, Alaska, telling of the passing of longtime resident and life member of the Springwater American Legion, Walter “Art” McDowell. Art was born March 18, 1932, in South Dansville to David and Jennie McDowell.
Memorial services were held at the Independent Baptist Church, in Homer. Burial with military rites will occur in South Dansville sometime in October.
Next week is a busy one for Springwater. The town board meets on Monday, Oct. 8, at 7 p.m. I apologize for not covering the last meeting but I was contagious and feverish and too ill to do much more than eat chicken soup and drink tea. I rarely find myself too sick to leave home, but our editor was there and can fill in the blanks for anyone who did not attend. The minutes of these meetings are posted on the town’s website on a fairly regular basis so anyone with a computer and internet access can follow the board’s decision making processes that way.

The weatherman tonight had some ominous news for this coming weekend. Time to winterize the vehicles and make sure you have the necessities for winter driving conditions.
As October is upon us and we all know the children look forward to the end of this month, you might be interested in the creepy sounds we have heard coming from the nether regions of the Springwater American Legion Post. An awful lot of people have been consulted thus past week trying to find a cause ... just saying ... something is a brewing. I will keep you posted.
Have a great week!
